The name tennis elbow refers to elbow pain that
is not limited to tennis players. It is technically called Lateral
Epicondylitis and the pain usually occurs at the bony part on the outside of the
elbow.
What
Causes
Tennis Elbow
The
condition occurs usually as a result of repetitive arm motion. This motion can
occur with tennis, golf or any activity that puts similar stresses on the
muscles (painting, hammering, rowing are just 3 examples). What happens is that
the overuse of the muscles can lead to small tears on the tendon that attaches
the muscle to the forearm. These tears if not allowed to heal can become
inflamed, and scar tissue develops. The scar is painful and prone to
re-injury, more scarring and more pain. This
abnormal tissue eventually becomes very sore, and whenever there is stress on
the muscles, the pain is worse.
Why
a Tennis Elbow Brace
Resting the tendon by not putting stress on the
muscles is the best way for the tears to heal. But most people want to continue
the activities that may have caused the problem. A brace, which wraps
around the forearm and restrains the muscle from flexing completely can be
used to relieve the stress on the muscles and tendon allowing for natural
healing while remaining active.
Note: Joint and muscle pain can be
symptoms of other more serious medical conditions. We
urge you to see your healthcare provider concerning any pain and discomfort that
you are experiencing.
